Dr. Sandra Short
I started as a dentist over 30 years ago. There were not many female dentists at the time and even though I was one of the better students in my year I could not get a job in Sydney, so I bought my own practice in Strathfield. This turned out to be a good move because I did not have anyone to rely on when things became difficult. I learned how to solve problems in dentistry and with respect to my business. I took up post graduate courses in everything that I could.
Shortly after I graduated Dr Leonard Linkow, a pioneer in dental implants, visited Australia from New York and gave some lectures that I attended. In those days he was a very controversial figure in dentistry. Other dentists did not believe in dental implants. They thought the implants would fail. Due to infection and cause catastrophic bone loss. He offered me a place to do a clinical residency in his clinic in New York to study dental implants. He was one of my mentors. I spent 6 months in New York studying with him.
I kept an interest in that area of dentistry as time went by. Later I was able to study under the late Dr Carl Misch, founder of the Misch International Implant Institute in USA. I am proud to say he was another mentor of mine.
Later, I went to Portugal to do a clinical residency under Dr Palo Malo the inventor of the All-on-4 restoration for full mouth reconstruction with implants and fixed bridges.
These 3 men were giants in the field of Dental Implants, and I have been able to stand on their shoulders using their experience, research and inventive brains to help my patients reach their goals.
I have been placing implants for the past 30 years and my experience has taught me what works and the pitfalls of some techniques. I am still in clinical practice in Double Bay.
Regarding personal injury I have been doing this work and assessing insurance claims as a medico-legal expert for over 15 years. I have been working for only a few firms that have sort my opinion in attempting to settle claims or disputes.
